A picnic along the Lake Como Greenway.

The Lake Como Greenway is a beautiful and easy walk that can be done with family, alone or with friends if you want to visit the lake center on foot. Simple, scenic, atmospheric, and full of points of interest, it is great if you want to see, in one day, what the best one of the most famous and amazing areas of the central lake has to offer.

Since it is a straight route, it is possible to start either from Cadenabbia or Colonno (the villages at either end), depending on where you come from. In both villages there are parking spaces, but on weekends from March to September you have to take into account the risk of struggling to find free places.

An alternative could be to park in one of the neighbouring villages, which are less crowded, and reach one of the two starting points of the Greenway by bus or boat service.

To help you organise yourself better, it may be useful to know that boats dock in the villages of Cadenabbia, Tremezzo and Lenno.

Of course, it all depends on the time you have available and the stops you want to make, but in the high season there is no shortage of runs and getting around by public transport can make the day less stressful.

Following the route is not difficult: it is well signposted both by blue signs placed at the points where detours cross, and by grey markings on the ground.

If you can also get a map (paper or digital), you’re done!

Greenway Lake Como: where to eat?

Whether one decides to walk it all in one go (about 10 km one way) or whether one prefers to include a visit to one or more attractions along the route (or a few hundred metres from it), one thing is certain: a stop to eat is a must.

Well, don’t worry! There are plenty of places and trattorias to stop for an aperitif, lunch or even just a coffee along the route.

But if you prefer something quicker, a nice alternative to a restaurant is certainly a fun picnic along the route!

There is no shortage of places suitable for the occasion, you just need to know about them and I am here to give you some advice 🙂 !

Stopping points directly along the Greenway

Although a bench is fine for eating a sandwich, why give up a proper picnic area with tables and facilities?

Without straying from the route, there are three areas I recommend for a stop-off, starting from Colonno:

1# The Park of Ossuccio, in via Andrea Castelli

It is a beautiful green area, with wooden tables in the shade of large birch trees, a children’s playground, grass, benches, tennis court and bowling alley. Inside the park there is also the Park Snack Bar.

2# Picnic tables in Lenno, Via Comoedia (near Lido di Lenno)

These are tables in the shade, a stone’s throw from one of the most beautiful lakeside promenades in the area and the starting point of the road leading to Villa Balbianello.

Have you already visited this villa?

In this article I explain how best to enjoy your visit!

3# Mayer Park, in Tremezzo (along the main road)

It is a fabulous park with grass and large trees (shade provided even in summer) with direct access to the lake!

Here the tables are located in the upper part of the park, but if you prefer the lake view, all you need is a blanket to spread out on the grass and the picnic is still assured.

Inside the park is the Acqua Cheta Bar.

Stop-off point a few hundred metres from the Greenway

1# The Ossuccio Lido

This is a lakeside area, with free access, granite tables, soft turf, olive trees and… a breathtaking view of Isola Comacina.

It is located right below the famous and over-photographed bell tower of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena.

Travelling along the Greenway, at the Ossuccio roundabout take the road down to the lake.

Bear in mind that in the summer months it is a very crowded place.

There is a bar-restaurant inside.

Where to shop along the Lake Como Greenway

In case you have not organised yourself beforehand, even along the Greenway, or a short distance from the track, there are small grocery stores and convenience stores where you can buy fresh bread, drinks and everything you need for an al fresco lunch.

1# ColonnoMinimarket, Via Statale 51. About 50 m from the Greenway route.

Shortly after the starting point you will reach a square: take the small road on the right-hand corner to reach the Strada Statale and then turn left.

The little shop is about ten metres away.

2# Sala ComacinaBakery and grocery, Via Statale Regina 40.

To reach it, you have to leave the Greenway by taking the steps from the San Rocco Chapel down to the lake. The shop is at the very end of the steps, on the opposite side of the road.

At this point, once you have done your shopping, a look at the village of Sala Comacina is a must.

It is absolutely worth it!

3# LennoSigma Supermarket, Via Statale 28.

The Greenway passes exactly behind the supermarket.

4# LennoDino market, via Statale 30.

Small, but well stocked.

5# Tremezzobutcher’s shop, Piazza Trieste 4.

It is along the route and exactly opposite the boat docking point.

6# Cadenabbiagrocery shop, Via Roma 6.

Also well stocked with typical products from other countries.

Now all you have to do is decide from which point on the Greenway to start and plan the various stops.

Enjoy your picnic!
