Bread cake or miascia, typical on Lake Como

Here is the recipe for one of the most famous cake of Lake Como, and more generally of Lombard cuisine, the bread cake, better known here as miascia.

Forget diets or similar things, tha cake I am about to tell you today is a cake with a capital C, very substantial, not to say calorific, despite the simplicity of its ingredients. Bear in mind that in the past it was often eaten as a real meal… it filled the belly and was very nutritious.

The version I am proposing is the one that a dear friend of mine ‘passed on’ to me. Who, in turn, ‘stole’ it from her grandmother’s recipe book.

What I like about this cake is that it is so easy to prepare and leaves a lot of room for everyone’s imagination. In fact, once you have the basic ingredients, then you can add a little of whatever you like, according to your personal taste.

But let’s get to the recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1l fresh milk
  • 400g dry bread
  • 1 whole egg
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa or chocolate squares
  • dried fruit (to taste)
  • chocolates, nougats, cookies, pine nuts, raisins….whatever you want and can find at home 🙂

1# The first thing to do is to break up the dry bread and soak it in milk to soften it. And, strange to say, but at this point it’s done!

2# The next step in fact is to add to this “mash” all the other ingredients on the list, mix well and put the resulting dough into a round cake pan.

3# Now all you have to do is bake the whole thing in the oven, at 180° for about an hour. And enjoy the result.

And as my friend’s grandmother used to say…the more ingredients the GOODER it is!
