‘How we were’ episode 3
Tourism in the 1980s
For the third appointment of the monthly column ‘How we were’, the theme I have chosen is ‘1980s tourism on Lake Como’.
The reason is simple: the lake has always lived on tourism and, in these parts, normality is to see boats full of the world, crowded hotels and restaurants, villas and gardens with endless lines of people at the gates and on the boulevards. This is what we are used to and this is what, for better or worse, we have learnt to live with and one of the things we most miss, after the hurricane of the pandemic.
The images chosen this month from my dad’s archive are a contrivance to relive scenes and atmospheres of a lake that is alive and vibrant, after difficult and silent months.
May it never be a good omen!
